STEERING MATTERS - WHY IT’S TIME TO GIVE MOUNTNEY A TURN

STEERING MATTERS - WHY IT’S TIME TO GIVE MOUNTNEY A TURN
Classic car enthusiasts talk incessantly about engines, suspension, tyres, etc., yet discussions about steering wheels are few and far between, which is strange when you consider they are the one item that’s used throughout every journey and are something drivers certainly wouldn’t get far without. However, it’s good to have the option of an alternative to a car’s standard issue, either because of normal wear and tear or simply to enhance the look of the vehicle’s interior. This is why British Motor Heritage’s online store, Motoring Classics, contains a wide selection of Mountney replacement steering wheels and related boss kits to suit a large number of collectors’ cars and pockets.
The wheels range from a semi-dished leather-rimmed Classic model of 12, 13, 14 or 15 inches diameter for just £56.00 inc. VAT, to a semi-dished riveted woodrim Traditional product in 13, 14 or 15 inches diameter for £105.00 inc. VAT. The related boss kits are finished in black or chrome and cost between £28.80 and £34.20 inc. VAT, so the total investment required to transform one’s primary link with the road can be less than the cost of one tyre.
Why choose Mountney? Based in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, this well-known British company has almost three decades experience of sourcing, designing and manufacturing classic car parts, all of which conform to the highest standards required (e.g. BSI, TUV and ISO where applicable).
For further information on the Mountney steering wheels available through Motoring Classics, plus all the other quality parts, car care items, clothing, luggage, hampers, key rings, watches, travel accessories, models etc. available from British Motor Heritage’s online store, log onto www.motoringclassics.co.uk.

BMH STEPPING UP ITS SUPPORT FOR THE CLASSIC MINI IN THE CAR’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

BMH STEPPING UP ITS SUPPORT FOR THE CLASSIC MINI IN THE CAR’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

Already a major supporter of the classic Mini, British Motor Heritage (BMH) is increasing its related activities throughout 2019 – the 60th anniversary of one of the world’s most cherished models of car.
Sponsorship of the IMM
First and foremost BMH will be one of the major sponsors of the 2019 IMM (International Mini Meet), which is this year being held at Washingpool Farm near Bristol over the weekend of August 8-12. In addition to financially backing the event, the company will have a significant on-site presence in the form of an array of representative cars, replacement bodyshells and an innovative display panel.

The mighty Mini will also be the focus of BMH’s Goodwood Revival stand (September 12-15), with a selection of bodyshells and complete vehicles again being the order of the day. Among the latter are likely to be the company’s own immaculately restored 1275 Cooper S, and its FIA Cooper S race car that will be competing in the HRDC series throughout this season – both Minis feature BMH replacement shells.
Ever more replacement bodyshells and individual panels
As the owner of the original Mini tooling, BMH is the only company in the world capable of producing replacement bodyshells and individual panels to exactly the correct specification and, following the addition of the MK1 Mini shell to its portfolio, is now able to support the owners of every mark of classic Mini made between 1959 and 2000. The company acquired the Mini tooling in 2002 and began the manufacture of replacement products soon afterwards, since when demand has grown year on year. So far, literally thousands of individual panels and no less than 773 complete bodyshells have been produced, with many more on the stocks for this year.

Underpinning ever more of the classic car market
Add those for the various versions of the MGB and MG Midget (and Austin-Healey Sprite) and the number of replacement shells produced by BMH so far totals no less than 6,111, and counting. Under the circumstances, it is fair to say that a great number of today’s treasured classics have survived thanks to the company’s replacement programme, and the notable health of the classic movement owes much to its foresight and continuing expansion. In addition to all the above, it nowadays also produces replacement panels for the Jaguar E-Type and classic Range Rover, as well the Morris Minor, Triumph TR6, Spitfire, GT6 and Stag.

THORNLEY KELHAM OFFERS STUNNING FULLY-RESTORED LANCIA AURELIA B20GT SERIES III

THORNLEY KELHAM OFFERS STUNNING FULLY-RESTORED LANCIA AURELIA B20GT SERIES III

Cotswolds-based concours restoration specialist Thornley Kelham is proud to offer this beautiful Lancia Aurelia B20GT Series III for sale. With over 1,200 man hours spent on metalwork alone, no detail has been overlooked in returning the car to its original glory.
As restoration specialists with an expert understanding of the intricacies of the Lancia marque, Thornley Kelham has revived this Series III to exacting factory standards - with exceptional attention to detail. Finished in its factory-original shade of ‘Amaranto’, with cream wheels and a light grey interior, this concours-worthy classic also has the desirable upgrade of a ‘Nardi’ floor change transmission.
Thornley Kelham has carried out some of the most renowned Lancia restorations in recent years and is particularly known in Aurelia circles for two ends of the restoration scale – the unique period Mille Miglia/Le Mans racer of Giovanni Bracco, and the now-famous limited-edition Lancia Aurelia ‘Outlaw’.
As industry leaders in Lancia restoration, Thornley Kelham restores and rebuilds concours-winning vehicles within its 32,000sq/ft workshop based near Cirencester. With purpose-built engine, metalwork and paint shops, the restoration team is able to carry out every last detail of any restoration to exacting standards. Covering over half-a-century of automotive history, Thornley Kelham’s restorations routinely see them revive vehicles as varied as 1920’s W.O Bentleys (3, 4½, 6.5 or 8 litre) and a Mercedes Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’.
Lancia only manufactured 720 examples of the Series III, with this car being one of the last twenty.  According to the original logbook, this Series III Aurelia was imported into the UK in January 1963, having originally been registered in Italy. All numbers match to this document, as does the specification of the car.
The previous owner collected the car post-restoration and immediately embarked on a 2000 mile-round Alpine trip; returning the car for its first service with only a minor oil leak. The car has been tried and tested throughout its post-restoration life and has proved itself as a reliable and capable Aurelia as they were in period. An incredibly advanced vehicle when launched, Thornley Kelham’s extensive experience in, and understanding of, all series of these innovative cars gives them the knowledge to set them up perfectly.
Having covered just over 5,000 miles since the restoration, and following a recent service, this 1953 B20GT is the perfect automobile for grand touring, classic rallying and more. This stunning Aurelia one of six classic Lancias currently available at Thornley Kelham, full details of which can be found here: http://www.thornleykelham.com/sales/1954-lancia-aurelia-b20gt-series-4/

REVEALED: BICESTER MOTION – FULL MASTERPLAN FOR IMMERSIVE AUTOMOTIVE RESORT FROM BICESTER HERITAGE

REVEALED: BICESTER MOTION – FULL MASTERPLAN FOR IMMERSIVE AUTOMOTIVE RESORT FROM BICESTER HERITAGE

Bicester Heritage has today unveiled ‘Bicester Motion’, its masterplan for the creation of the UK’s first automotive resort, with an ambition to become one of the country’s top 20 tourist and leisure destinations.
Having successfully developed the concept of a Centre for Excellence, experience and community for the historic automotive sector, Bicester Heritage (which occupies just 5% of the site) will now become a component of a larger landmark development named Bicester Motion. This expansion will ensure that the historic airfield location it calls home will fulfil its original and continued purpose as a focal point for cutting edge technology.
As Bicester Motion launches across 444 acres, the new resort hopes to offer leisure, culture and tourism experiences within one destination. Consisting of multiple zones, the Bicester Motion concept comprises of the recently announced 344 room hotel and conference development (which received unanimous planning approval from Cherwell District Council at the end of 2018), and an additional 770,000 feet of operational business and leisure accommodation sitewide.
As a unique, holistic experience, Bicester Motion seeks to become a UK top 20 tourist attraction that offers a destination for one million tourists many of whom already visit Bicester on day trips, and a further 30+ businesses providing over 2,000 skilled jobs to the area. Embracing the location’s inherent history and existing business success, Bicester Motion will provide world-class leisure facilities, employment and business opportunities at a leading automotive-focused development unlike any other.
Bicester Motion aims to be the first experiential automotive resort where visitors can become fully immersed in the breadth of our automotive culture, from existing on-site historic vehicle specialists through to future electric and autonomous technology. This planned low-density development will be dedicated to driving experience and the demonstration of high-tech engineering as well as health, wellbeing, events, accommodation and aviation.
Bicester Motion aspires to include a brand experience centre offering driver experiences on both road and off-road courses with restaurants and cafés, offering activities for the whole family. Close to the brand centre, the aim is to transform the dilapidated quarry and former industrial areas into the Bicester Reserve. This ecology-led health and wellbeing zone aspires to utilise the site’s currently inaccessible natural areas and offer access to a new country park complete with footpaths, cycle paths and lakeside lodges ideal for family breaks.
The potential construction of inimitable Motor Vaults as a community of private gallery-style garages for car storage with accommodation will allow owners to use and maintain their vehicles in a beautifully designed and discreet location. Nestled into the WW2 airfield’s boundary, these car storage structures will sit adjacent to the current Bomb Stores, a fitting tribute to an area also purpose-built as a storage solution, but also close to the current supportive campus of over 40 industry specialists as well as test circuits.
Bicester Motion map

Land abutting the Bicester ring road is earmarked for Bicester Motion’s Future Automotive Speed Technology hub or F.A.S.T. Zone. This planned new centre of excellence will be a thriving home for automotive ‘tech’ development, demonstration and education.
Providing an introduction to the future of the automotive movement is central to Bicester Motion’s concept and where else in the UK is it possible to experience future vehicles in conjunction with our motoring history, past and present? The existing perimeter circuit, The Radial, once refurbished will offer visitors the chance to experience these vehicles in a controlled environment as well as learn skills.
Bicester Expo, an aspiring cutting-edge exhibition centre based in the former WW2 C Type Hangars will provide significant venues for conferencing, automotive events and leisure opportunities.
By partnering with both blue-chip and cutting-edge businesses, the generation of new skilled jobs and financial contribution to the local and wider economy stand to benefit the area immensely. Offering new amenities and experiences, this development hopes to ensure cohesive links to Bicester town centre, Bicester Village and the Ox-Cam ‘technology corridor’.
Dan Geoghegan, Chief Executive of Bicester Motion, commented:
“The automotive industry is in a fascinating state of flux owing to changing customer habits and requirements, alongside the technology shift in drivetrains and autonomy.  Bicester Motion will enable both new and existing manufacturers to interact more effectively with their clientele.  It will help build those relationships in a revolutionary way by providing an immersive environment that offers a lifestyle experience beyond just cars on tracks or visiting a showroom.  The automotive world is changing, and we plan to offer a first-of-its-kind resort that will have multi-generational appeal.”
“Being around 90 minutes from 50% of the UK population makes the Bicester Motion location second to none, furthermore Oxfordshire receives 27.6 million visitors per annum.  Of those, 7 million visitors head to Bicester Village a stone’s throw away, with arguably the most desirable national and international demographic to the automotive industry."

ARISTOCARS FROM TOP GEAR FILMING GO ON SHOW AT BEAULIEU

ARISTOCARS FROM TOP GEAR FILMING GO ON SHOW AT BEAULIEU

Three luxury cars dubbed the Aristocars from the latest Top Gear filming are to go on show in the World of Top Gear at Beaulieu
Stripped of their plush interior fittings and modified to survive a gruelling six-hour endurance race at Silverstone, Matt LeBlanc’s Bentley Turbo R, Chris Harris’ Mercedes 600 SEL and Rory Reid’s Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow are quite unlike any normal race cars.
In episode four of the new series, Matt, Chris and Rory were challenged to buy a second-hand car for the same price as the UK’s cheapest new car, a Dacia Sandero. Not surprisingly with a budget of £6,000, the presenters aimed high and snapped up three special executive saloons with powerful V8 and V12 engines.
With his 1988 Bentley, Matt chose a coveted British super saloon with impeccable heritage, while the grandiose appearance of Rory’s 1975 Rolls-Royce was equally imposing and  Chris opted for German quality with his high-spec 1992 Mercedes.
The cars were pitted against each other on the Top Gear test track, challenged by Stig at the wheel of a Dacia Sandero and tasked with avoiding obstacles on the ‘Top Gear real-world urban driving simulator’. The greatest test was to complete the Birkett Six-Hour Relay Race at the famous Silverstone circuit. Extensively modified for track use, the trio of cars swapped leather seats for roll cages and beefed up the suspension to create unlikely looking racing cars.
Visitors to Beaulieu can see the Aristocars on display in the World of Top Gear, which was recently refreshed with new exhibits from recent Top Gear filming while continuing to pay homage to the programme’s past.
The World of Top Gear is included in a general admission ticket to Beaulieu, which also includes entry to the National Motor Museum with its new Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 years exhibition, On Screen Cars, the ancestral Montagu home of Palace House, 13thcentury Beaulieu Abbey, the grounds and gardens. Tickets can be bought in advance online. For tickets and details see www.beaulieu.co.uk or call 01590 612345.

RBW SECURES THE FUTURE OF CLASSIC MOTORING WITH NEW ELECTRIC RECREATIONS

Midlands classic motoring specialist RBW Classic Electric Cars have joined forces with world leading names to secure the future of classic motoring with the launch of two limited edition electric recreations.
RBW is working closely with Zytek Automotive, part of Continental AG, who provides the world championship winning technology applied to Formula E racing cars. The aim is to create a stunning vehicle that has the aesthetic appeal of a classic car but with all the engineering of a modern electric vehicle.
Managing Director Peter Swain said: “Our aim is to make these great classic cars better for the modern age and to do that, we have been fortunate to be supported by great companies who share the same ethos.
The first of the electric designs is the RBW MGB recreation, which affords all the stylings of an MGB, with the second being the RBW XKSS recreation, based on the Jaguar model. Both cars preserve these iconic designs for the future classic motorist.
To ensure drivers comfortable driving and complete safety, rather than taking an old body shell with distressed and tired metal, RBW has partnered with British Motor Heritage and Gregson Polska to provide brand new body shells.
Swain added: “In our research and development, we put the cars through vigorous testing which showed just how much pressure is on the body as well as the components. Such is the power of the engine, we used new components wherever possible to ensure the best for owners to enjoy their classic electric sports car.
The limited-edition hand-built models, with an initial 30 examples created, launched to the motoring trade at Cenex, a showcase of low carbon vehicle technologies, on 12/13 September.
A public launch will follow at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show from 9-11 November at Birmingham’s NEC where enthusiasts can reserve their vehicle with a small deposit.

WARNING ISSUED AFTER JD CLASSICS ENTERS INTO ADMINISTRATION

WARNING ISSUED AFTER JD CLASSICS ENTERS INTO ADMINISTRATION

CAR restoration company JD Classics has entered administration following investigations into apparent financial irregularities within the business.
Alvarez & Marsal Europe LLP was appointed as the administrator of the Essex-based company, with A&M managing directors Mark Firmin, Richard Beard and Richard Fleming stepping in to watch over the firm, which employs around 60 people.
JD Classics specialises in the restoration, preparation and sale of classic cars. Its current inventory consists of more than 110 vehicles from premium brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jaguar and Maserati. Some of the business’s stock is displayed in a 14,000m² showroom in London’s Mayfair.
The news prompted London law firm Healys LLP to send an ominous warning to the classic car world, telling companies that more deliberation and responsibility needed to be brought to transactions by dealers, buyers and sellers.
In a statement, the leader of Healys’ classic car group, Clive Robertson, said: ‘There had been rumours of financial irregularity at the business, which were apparently confirmed in March of this year when judgment in the case of Michael Tuke v JD Classics was given, there being several cases lodged by the same claimant still pending.
‘It may be some time before the full picture emerges, so it could be premature to be seeking to know what lessons, if any, can be learnt, but it may be no more simple than saying that in such a relatively new and fast-growing industry, balance and reason may have been left behind, so that more deliberation and responsibility needs to be brought to transactions by dealers, buyers and sellers.
‘There has probably not been a more important time to make use of skilled and established legal advice. You’d not buy a house without a conveyancing solicitor, so why spend, potentially, more money without similar professional advice and guidance?’
It is hoped that a buyer can be found and that JD Classics will be able to continue to trade.

CREDIT SUISSE HISTORIC RACING FORUM PROVIDED A FASCINATING INSIGHT IN TO LE MANS

A full house of VIPs, motor-racing personalities and members of the press flocked to Goodwood’s Race Control building for the Credit Suisse Historic Racing Forum. Before the on-track action got underway at the 2018 Revival Meeting, a distinguished panel met on the morning of Saturday 8 September to discuss ‘The Challenge of Le Mans’.
Derek Bell, five times a winner of the famous 24 Hours, was joined by Alain de Cadenet, Gordon Murray and 1989 victor Jochen Mass. The four legends boast a wealth of Le Mans experience, and kept the audience enthralled with their entertaining memories of the race.
Respected broadcaster Bruce Jones hosted the lively event, and topics covered included the different approaches taken by different teams – with Bell recalling that in his debut for Ferrari in 1970 he was told simply to “get in and drive”. His later races for Porsche were much more disciplined, and Bell described the German team as being the greatest he ever drove for.
Mass discussed the unique eight-mile circuit itself, speaking of its many challenges and its dangerous nature. The German ace also remembered partnering a young Michael Schumacher at Mercedes and instilling in the future seven-times Formula One World Champion important lessons about how to approach the 24 Hours.
De Cadenet brilliantly described how Murray did “a year’s work in a few weeks” in order to create him a sports-prototype for the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours. The design genius did it alongside his day job, remembering how he used to finish at Brabham at 9pm, then work on de Cadenet’s car until 3am. They were rewarded with the first Le Mans finish for a car powered by the Cosworth DFV engine, and de Cadenet’s privateer team went on to achieve a number of giant-killing results.
Murray also shared his memories of adapting his McLaren F1 road car into the GTR racer, which sensationally won at Le Mans on its debut in 1995. Throughout the F1’s development, he’d been adamant that it was not going to go racing – but eventually, he relented, and the GTR wrote itself into the history books.
Fellow Le Mans icons Jackie Oliver and John Fitzpatrick were in the audience, while Richard Attwood – winner of the 1970 24 Hours – joined the panel towards the end and raised the biggest laugh of the morning by wryly remembering that Le Mans “wasn’t that difficult, really”.

The Revival’s 2018 race programme had opened on a Friday evening with an unforgettable edition of the Kinrara Trophy, and Credit Suisse once again invited guests to enjoy the racing from its Race Control roof terrace. With a glorious sunset forming an evocative backdrop, they enjoyed the best seats in the house as the Ferrari 250GT ‘Breadvan’ of Niklas Halusa and Emanuele Pirro pipped the Jaguar E-type of Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen after one of the Revival’s most entertaining duels.

  • New sale to kick-off 2019 auction season
  • Entries now invited for the sale on 12th January 2019 at NEC, Birmingham10 September 2018 - The 2019 classic car auction season is set to begin with a new partnership following the signing of a deal between specialist auction house Silverstone Auctions and Autosport International.
Recognised as one of the UK’s leading classic car auction houses and holder of a number of world record auction prices, Silverstone Auctions will inject a premium auction experience to the show with a one-day sale of best of breed classic and competition cars on 12th January 2019.
The show, which has moved to a larger area within Birmingham’s NEC, returns for its 29th year on 10th-13th January 2019 and is expected to attract close to 100,000 enthusiasts and trade visitors and over 700 exhibitors as the motorsport pre-season opener.
Autosport International, already the world’s largest motorsport show bringing together motorsport, automotive and engineering sectors under one roof, is the definitive international hub and attracts visitors from across the UK and the globe.
Silverstone Auctions brings a wealth of classic car and motorsport experience to the event having already held dedicated classic and competition car sales at other major international automotive events.
Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, commented; “We are hugely excited to be embarking on this new partnership with Autosport International. Of course, we attend the show ourselves and have watched it really develop in recent times. The demographics of visitors fits perfectly with our own clients, after all, it is a show full of motorsport people and we know that to work in this business you need passion, so what better way to indulge that than investing in a classic? We look forward to bringing our own approach and style to the auction element of the show which will be our first classic car sale of the year, with a few special competition cars also to be included.”

MASERATI AT THE 20th GOODWOOD REVIVAL

Last weekend, Maserati took part in the 20th anniversary of the glamorous Goodwood Revival held at the famous racing circuit in West Sussex which captures the automotive world as it was from 1948 to 1966 with both competitors and spectators in period dress.
As an Automotive Partner of Goodwood Revival, Maserati once again took part in the Earl’s Court Motor Show with a display inspired by the marque’s classic 1960s motor show stands. Maserati’s future and past appeared in perfect harmony, as Maserati showcased the brands first SUV, the Levante GranLusso, finished in Blu Emozione with Zegna interiors alongside the executive saloon, the Ghibli GranSport in Bianco Alpi. The two modern cars were joined on the stand by a stunning red 1964 Sebring Series 1.

Over twenty classic Maserati models, including a 3500GT, Tipo 61 ‘Birdcage’ along with five examples of the iconic 250F, were competing at Revival, featuring in races across the three-day event. Maserati cars took to the circuit competing in the Kinrara Trophy, Goodwood Trophy, Freddie March Memorial Trophy, Richmond & Gordon Trophies and Sussex Trophy. Highlights from the weekend included a victory in the Goodwood Trophy on Saturday afternoon for former British GT Champion Callum Lockie in the 1938 Maserati 6CM, as well as a fifth-place finish in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy for Conrad Ulrich in a 1955 Maserati 300S.
Guests of Maserati were able to experience old-world glamour at the Revival, enjoying exclusive hospitality at Goodwood House on Sunday, and being chauffeur driven to and from the Revival in a fleet of Maserati Levante, Quattroporte and Ghibli models.
