MASERATI CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST INDY COUPÉ DELIVERY

MASERATI CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST INDY COUPÉ DELIVERY

The 1st of July 1969 is an important day in the history of Maserati, since the first Indy built for a customer left the Trident Brand's historic headquarters at Via Ciro Menotti 322 in Modena, heading for delivery in Switzerland. The car was shipped to Maserati's Swiss importer of that time, “Martinelli e Sonvico” in Chiasso. A few days later, the Indy, in "oro metalizzato" external colour and brown leather interior, was consigned to a wealthy Swiss businessman.
The Maserati Indy was presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1968, on the Carrozzeria Vignale stand. The following year, the car officially debuted on the Maserati stand at the Geneva Motor Show. In 1968, Maserati built about 700 cars, the best result it had ever recorded since the opening of the Modena production plant. The Maserati range in 1968 was composed of Ghibli, Mexico, Mistral, Quattroporte and Sebring models. In the same year, Maserati achieved a 43% market share in the "over 3,500 cc” segment in Italy.
In response to demand from customers who were looking for a comfortable, habitable and sporting car, Maserati decided to develop a new model. This led to the start of the AM116 (Alfieri Maserati 116) project: Carrozzeria Vignale was commissioned to design a four-seater coupé that would deliver comfort, sporty performances and innovative looks. The outcome was the Indy, named in honour of the 8CTF's impressive wins at the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940.
The new Indy had large windows to ensure excellent visibility without blind spots, while also giving the car a particularly sleek line. It also featured many genuine sportscar details: the front included pop-up headlights, a real sportscar icon of the time, and an air scoop underneath the slender bumper. Another distinctive characteristic was the truncated rear, reflecting the strong focus on aerodynamic efficiency in the design phase.
Initially, the engine was a 4,136 cc V8 with a bore of 88mm and stroke of 85mm, four Weber 42 DCNF carburettors and single-plug transistor ignition with battery and regulating distributor. The standard transmission was five-speed manual, with the automatic gearbox on request. Its power output was 260 hp and top speed peaked at 250 km/h. In 1970 the Indy was also offered with the 4,719 cc V8 engine, equipped with the new electronic ignition system developed by Bosch. The maximum power output was boosted to 290 hp, with a top speed of 280 km/h.
From 1971, the 300 hp, a 4,930 cc engine was introduced alongside the existing powerplants, and from 1973 this became the only propulsion unit available for the Indy. The Maserati Indy boasted a high specification as standard: leather seat upholstery, mechanical anti-theft system, adjustable steering wheel, heated rear window, tinted power windows, reclining front seats with headrests and iodine headlights. Automatic gearbox, power steering and radio were available as optional. From 1973, an air-conditioning system was added as standard. In total, from 1969 to 1975, the Modena plant built 1,102 Indy cars.
Prominent customers included Abdorreza Pahlavi, the Shah of Persia’s brother, who ordered an Indy in 1974, specifying a number of options including an opening sunroof. The car was prepared to his requirements and delivered at the company headquarters in February 1975. The car still survives and is now in a private collection.
Key technical features of the Maserati Indy:
Production dates: 1969 - 1975
Chassis: semi-monocoque with front subframe
Engine: 90° V8
Displacement: from 4,136 cc to 4,930 cc
Power: from 260 hp to 300 hp

Braking system: ventilated discs with a servo system
Weight: from 1,500 kg to 1,650 kg

BMH STEPPING UP ITS SUPPORT FOR THE CLASSIC MINI IN THE CAR’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

BMH STEPPING UP ITS SUPPORT FOR THE CLASSIC MINI IN THE CAR’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

Already a major supporter of the classic Mini, British Motor Heritage (BMH) is increasing its related activities throughout 2019 – the 60th anniversary of one of the world’s most cherished models of car.
Sponsorship of the IMM
First and foremost BMH will be one of the major sponsors of the 2019 IMM (International Mini Meet), which is this year being held at Washingpool Farm near Bristol over the weekend of August 8-12. In addition to financially backing the event, the company will have a significant on-site presence in the form of an array of representative cars, replacement bodyshells and an innovative display panel.

The mighty Mini will also be the focus of BMH’s Goodwood Revival stand (September 12-15), with a selection of bodyshells and complete vehicles again being the order of the day. Among the latter are likely to be the company’s own immaculately restored 1275 Cooper S, and its FIA Cooper S race car that will be competing in the HRDC series throughout this season – both Minis feature BMH replacement shells.
Ever more replacement bodyshells and individual panels
As the owner of the original Mini tooling, BMH is the only company in the world capable of producing replacement bodyshells and individual panels to exactly the correct specification and, following the addition of the MK1 Mini shell to its portfolio, is now able to support the owners of every mark of classic Mini made between 1959 and 2000. The company acquired the Mini tooling in 2002 and began the manufacture of replacement products soon afterwards, since when demand has grown year on year. So far, literally thousands of individual panels and no less than 773 complete bodyshells have been produced, with many more on the stocks for this year.

Underpinning ever more of the classic car market
Add those for the various versions of the MGB and MG Midget (and Austin-Healey Sprite) and the number of replacement shells produced by BMH so far totals no less than 6,111, and counting. Under the circumstances, it is fair to say that a great number of today’s treasured classics have survived thanks to the company’s replacement programme, and the notable health of the classic movement owes much to its foresight and continuing expansion. In addition to all the above, it nowadays also produces replacement panels for the Jaguar E-Type and classic Range Rover, as well the Morris Minor, Triumph TR6, Spitfire, GT6 and Stag.

SHELL POSTER REVEALED TO CELEBRATE BEAULIEU 25TH ANNIVERSARY

SHELL POSTER REVEALED TO CELEBRATE BEAULIEU 25TH ANNIVERSARY

l-r Jane Keate, Rahul Malhotra, Nicky Balfour Penney, Denise Harrison & Lord Montagu
Shell has unveiled a new poster featuring Beaulieu as a great British destination, to celebrate 25 years of the Shell Heritage Art Collection at the National Motor Museum Trust.
Wimbledon College of Art MA Painting student Denise Harrison was awarded the commission to produce the poster in the enduring Shell theme of Everywhere You Go – You Can Be Sure of Shell, and her work was presented at the Beaulieu One Hundred annual dinner.
A limited edition print of the poster was also auctioned to raise funds for the Trust, a charitable organisation which is dedicated to preserving the history of motoring in Britain through its world-famous collection of vehicles and the extensive archive of film footage, images, documents and books housed in the Collections Centre.
Emerging artist Denise was selected by a judging panel from Shell Brands International, the Trust and Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. She now follows in the footsteps of artists Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Rex Whistler and Vanessa Bell who contributed to the 1930s - 50s Shell advertising campaign.
Denise, who is known for her vivid colour palette and sensitive but lively use of gestural paint, explored the Beaulieu Estate for inspiration and created sketches to inform her final painting, which will now become part of the Shell Heritage Art Collection.
Denise said: “I’ve really enjoyed painting this piece for the Shell Heritage Art Collection. I included the gyrfalcon because of its historical connections to Beaulieu and was inspired by the trees of the New Forest, the wooden dock of Buckler’s Hard, Beaulieu Abbey and, of course, the Montagu ancestral home of Palace House.”
“Beaulieu’s landscape is so full of tranquillity and enchantment. I wanted to capture its beauty and its vibrant rich history through the use of colour and imagery.”
Rahul Malhotra, head of Brand Strategy & Stewardship for Shell said: “Shell has a long and proud history in the UK of supporting emerging artists by commissioning them for commercial work and we are very pleased to have worked with Denise. Her final image is bright and accessible, it brings vibrancy to the view of Beaulieu and reflects the modern approach of Shell as a company.”
One of the most important collections of 20th-century British commercial art, the Shell Heritage Art Collection includes advertising posters, original paintings, cartoons and press advertisements plus the ever-popular Shell County Guidebooks. Posters and paintings from the collection have been continuously on show in the museum and also loaned regularly to museums and galleries around Britain and Europe, allowing access to the collection to around a million people a year. Its popularity is due, in part, to the high calibre of artists previously commissioned for Shell’s campaigns. The Collection was previously stored at Shell-Mex House in London and officially inaugurated at Beaulieu by Prince Michael of Kent in 1993.
As an Accredited Museum, the Trust’s collections have been designated by the Arts Council England as being of national and international importance. Stored alongside the 1.7 million items housed in the Trust’s Collections Centre, the Shell Heritage Art Collection has been well cared for and has benefitted from this strong heritage association for the past 25 years.

The home of Lotus in Hethel hosted 8,000 Lotus owners and enthusiasts from all over the world, as well as 1,600 Lotus cars of all eras. From the Team Lotus F1 race cars to the rally Sunbeam Lotus, Lotus Cortina all the way to the present line-up of Evora, Exige and Elise, there were Lotus road and competition cars of all ages present.
Group Lotus Plc’s CEO Mr Feng Qingfeng presented the company’s vision to the crowds present and viewers online. As well as leading the anniversary track procession, he also personally revealed two bespoke Lotus Exclusive Evora GT410s, both in heritage livery. Speaking at the event, Group Lotus Plc’s CEO, Mr Feng Qingfeng said: “Today has been an amazing day of celebration. To have met so many Lotus owners and enthusiasts, and understand their passion for our brand is truly inspiring. We are committed to our home in Norfolk, and there’s no place better to gather and remember what Lotus stands for and what makes it so special as a leading automotive marque. To have so many of our cars return home has really made the day, and I’d like to thank everyone for their help and support, both now and in the future, as we grow and develop the business.”
Lotus’ 70th anniversary in numbers
For the first time ever, fans from all over the world were able to watch online via the live streams on YouTube as well as Facebook Live and other social media channels. With over 8,000 viewers catching all the action on the web, a further 8,000 were there on a sold-out day to celebrate Lotus and its 70th anniversary.
The live stream and social channels used #Lotus70 to share top moments throughout the day, and both the YouTube chat and Facebook Live feeds were filled with anecdotes and praise for Lotus during its 70th-anniversary event.
The largest gathering of Lotus cars ever seen
The day saw the largest ever collection of Lotus cars assembled. With 1,600 cars arriving at the Hethel site, it was a special way to mark the 70th anniversary.
The British marque invited owners to showcase some of their pride and joys to celebrate. From a heritage Lotus Mark VI to the latest Lotus Evora GT430s, ex-rally Sunbeam Lotus’ and immaculate Lotus Cortinas, there was something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.
Seven decades of Lotus on track
Presenting some of the racing team’s legendary F1 cars, responsible for Lotus’ 13 world championships: including seven constructors and six drivers totalling 81 race victories, Classic Team Lotus wowed the crowds with demonstration runs, allowing enthusiasts to witness the sights and the sounds of the cars in action.
Highlights included the DFV-powered Lotus 49 designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe for the 1967 F1 season and the famed 1978 Lotus 79, the first F1 car to take full advantage of ground effect aerodynamics, not to mention the iconic 1966 Lotus 43.
The audience in the grandstands also cheered as they saw Lotus’ professional drivers smoke up the tarmac in an Evora GT410 Sport, an Exige Sport 410 and the Elise Sport 220. With the addition of smoke bombs in Lotus green and yellow, it was a fitting spectacle for the crowds and online viewers.
The Jim Clark Special Edition Evora GT410 Sport
Also on display was the 100,000th Lotus ever built. Previously announced at Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Jim Clark Trust’s Lotus Evora GT410 Sport was showcased during the anniversary event. Created by Lotus Exclusive, the Evora GT410 Sport had been reimagined in the livery of Jim Clark’s famous Lotus Elan. Finished in red and silver, visitors were able to buy tickets to win the car in a special raffle on the day. More details on how to win can be found at www.jimclarklotus.com.
700 cars lap the Hethel track to commemorate 70 years of Lotus
Celebrating 70 years of Lotus, the British marque hosted the largest parade of Lotus sports cars ever seen on the Hethel track. A finishing flourish to a special day, 700 cars and their owners were part of the anniversary parade that will go down in Lotus’ history books.
Poignant for all Lotus owners that took part, the procession included the very latest models as well as the historically important Lotus Mark VII and even a Sunbeam Lotus and a Lotus Carlton. Led by Group Lotus Plc’s CEO Mr Feng Qingfeng, in a Lotus Eleven driven by Clive Chapman, the car which was once owned by his father, Colin Chapman. The Eleven of Qingfeng/Chapman was followed by an Evora GT430 and a GT410 Sport in hot pursuit.
Lotus Bikes and owners’ clubs
Amidst all the four-wheeled fun, Lotus’ two wheel achievements were recognised with a display from the 110 Lotus Bike Club, showing both the Lotus Engineering 108 and 110 bikes in action.
Lotus owners’ clubs were also on hand with static displays of their own. Showcasing some of the most incredible and sought-after models of Lotus’ past and present line-up, 14 owners clubs and members from all over the world were part of the display.
In addition, a secret concours competition took place with online influencer Sam Fane, otherwise known as Seen Through Glass. Sam, in secret, judged all of the cars on site. A tricky decision, Sam finally awarded a Sunbeam Lotus of Fréquelin/Todt fame as his winner.
Lotus legends
Joining the 8,000 attendees on site were a range of Lotus legends – the people that made Lotus what it is today – all with their own stories to tell on the live broadcast feed. Interviewed throughout the day, viewers saw famous Lotus alumni such as Mike Kimberley, Bob Dance, as well as Elisa Artioli, all telling anecdotes and their own Lotus memories. It gave viewers online and attendees on the day a glimpse into Lotus’ past through the eyes of those who created its history.
