RESPONSIBLE USE IS KEY – FIVA INTRODUCES ITS NEW GUIDE FOR HISTORIC MOTORING

One of the highlights of FIVA’s annual General Assembly, held this year in Gibraltar, was the presentation of the FIVA Guide for responsible use of historic vehicles on today’s roads. It reminds owners and drivers of historic vehicles of the importance of caring for the environment, and for the safety of other road users when taking a trip in a historic vehicle.

Tiddo Bresters, FIVA’s Vice President for Legislation, comments, “FIVA is fully aware that the world of mobility and transport is changing. However, it is also deeply convinced that in times of rapid innovation in vehicle technology, the sight of historic vehicles in use on the roads – artefacts that demonstrate the designs, the skills and the cultures of past times – will continue to delight people all over the world.

“Not only does our new Guide address the more than a million and a half historic vehicle owners that FIVA represents, it will also help the authorities and institutions influential in road safety and the environment to recognise that historic vehicles have a place in the world’s future landscape – as they have had for so many decades in the past.”

With the publication of the new Guide, FIVA confirms its commitment to maintaining the high standards of road safety for which historic vehicle drivers are known – not least by the insurance industry. (Indeed, FIVA is a member of the European Road Safety Charter, which it joined almost 10 years ago.)

The Guide replaces earlier publications that expressed FIVA’s respect for these two essential concerns – the environment and the safety of other road-users – and FIVA’s member organisations in around 70 countries, across all continents, will be encouraged to actively distribute it.

The Guide, which has over 20 pages and is imaginatively illustrated by three women illustrators from three different countries, has been edited under the direction of FIVA’s Legislation Commission. The cover of the Guide (image available for publication) is inspired by an actual photograph taken by FIVA’s Tiddo Bresters in Heidelberg in 2018 – and it perfectly illustrates the joy of introducing future generations to our mobile heritage. It shows children displaying a natural curiosity in the unusual sight of a BMW Isetta – a motorcycle-engined microcar from the 1950s – and in the background, the illustrator has added its modern equivalent, a brand-new electric microcar, the Microlino, inspired by the Isetta.

The winners of the 2018 Classic & Sports Car Club Awards, held in association with Lancaster Insurance, have been revealed at a memorable ceremony at the Hilton Metropole, Birmingham.

This year, the judges received an unprecedented number of entries from a diverse array of car clubs, as well as those passionate individuals who share a drive to preserve motoring history and broaden the appeal of the classic car community.

Alastair Clements, Editor in Chief of Classic & Sports Car, said: “Our judging panel was blown away by the volume and quality of the submissions this year. The overall impression from evaluating the entries was just how passionate, supportive and welcoming the entire classic car world is. We’ve learnt about labour-of-love restorations, incredible charity drives, youthful exuberance and an especially poignant rally marking the centenary of World War I. These extraordinary groups are the people who shape the classic car community. Moreover, the submissions also brought home what a bright future there is for classic motoring, and we would like to congratulate all of our 2018 winners on their fantastic efforts over the past year.”

THE FUTURE MEETS THE PAST AT THE 2018 LES GRANDES HEURES AUTOMOBILES (LGHA)

The recent fourth edition of the annual Les Grandes Heures Automobiles (LGHA), held at the French temple of speed – the legendary banked Linas-Montlhéry Autodrome circuit just south of Paris – was unanimously declared to be the best yet by both the hundreds of participating competitors, plus the record number of enthusiastic spectators from all over Europe, all of which revealed in the glorious sunshine as they enjoyed spectacular vehicle demonstrations on the steeply banked Montlhéry track.

The famous record-breaking metallic-bronze Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe, registered LWK 707 and driven in early August 1952 by a quartet of British drivers - Stirling Moss, Leslie Johnson, Jack Fairman and Bert Hadley – to set an average speed record of 107.46 mph for seven days and nights non-stop at the Linas-Montlhéry Autodrome track, made a welcome and emotional return to the steeply racked circuit especially for the LGHA.

The Jaguar was joined by a Ferrari 156 F1 ‘Sharknose’ from the UK, driven by racing legend Arturo Merzario from Italy, along with the well-known BMW 3-Series Group 5 ‘Jägermeister’ from Switzerland, a selection of vintage competition Porsches from Germany, motorcycles from Belgium, plus naturally many exceptional models from France, including Matra, Alpine, Citroen, Bugatti, Peugeot, Voisin, Venturi and others, such as some rare racing Abarth SPs, Lancia Stratos, Ford GT40s and various Ferraris.

Members of the ex-works Alpine-Renault rally team gathered around Jacques Cheinisse and some of his ‘musketeers’ at LGHA to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the first WRC Constructors Title in the history of rallying. Other famous drivers present at the 2018 LGHA included Jean-Claude Andruet, François Chatriot, Emmanuel Collard, Erik Comas, Jean Pierre Jaussaud, Arturo Merzario, Philippe Monneret, Norman Nato, Bob Neyret, Nelson Panciatici and rallying legend Bruno Saby.

For the fourth LGHA, Europe converged on the Autodrome to put it back at the heart of the historic motorsports, but with the modern additions of a series of activities, including Formula E and a drift session and current trials bikers, using parts of the new Montlhéry infield construction site to jaw-dropping advantage. The Paris auction house Aguttes organised its second sale in the LGHA’s 1924 Pavilion, its star lots including a trio of important AC models, plus a number of modern classic hot hatches; all fetching healthy prices.

More than 50 exhibitors presented their latest products and expertise to the LGHA visitors, including Alpine, Alfa Romeo, Effeffe and new local passenger car producer MPM Motors, with its Erelis model making its dynamic world debut on the Montlhéry banking, with the LGHA visiting public able to drive the cars for themselves. There was fun for younger ages too with mini-quads, mini 4x4s, and mini-bikes to add to the passion for motoring from an early age.

Away from the historic competition machines at the LGHA, a huge display of around 1,000 vehicles from many classic cars and bikes clubs were also in attendance, as well as exotic special supercars and performance GTs, plus a special LGHA classic car tour to the event.

Celebrating an unrivalled legacy of innovation, amazing road cars and success on the race tracks of the world, Lotus will be opening the gates to its home in Hethel, Norfolk, on Saturday 29th September as it marks 70 years from when founder Colin Chapman built his first car – the first Lotus.

For the first time, Lotus will be live streaming an event via YouTube to ensure a truly global celebration. Held at the home of Lotus for over 50 years, the Hethel facility will host over 8,000 people and celebrates the iconic sports car manufacturer, in what promises to be a day like no other. Despite tickets to the Lotus 70th anniversary event selling out within five hours of release, Lotus has ensured that fans from around the world can still enjoy the day. 

This weekend’s anniversary event will see one of the biggest ever gatherings of the famous marque’s road and race cars ever assembled. In 1948, in a lock-up in London, founder Colin Chapman built the first Lotus. From that small garage sprang a global brand, famous for its amazing road cars and its success on the race tracks of the world.

With vehicle displays, owners’ clubs, championship-winning racing cars, as well as demonstration laps on the company’s famous on-site test track, the scene is set for an outstanding celebration of one of the automotive world’s most famous names.

ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB ANNOUNCES SHORTLIST FOR ITS 2018 MOTORING BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Now in its fifth year, the Royal Automobile Club Motoring Book Awards are recognised as the most prestigious awards to be bestowed in the automotive publishing industry. The annual awards, hosted by respected broadcaster and journalist Simon Taylor, will take place on Wednesday 31 October at a special evening held at the Club’s historic Pall Mall clubhouse, amongst many distinguished industry guests.

Two awards will be presented - the main Motoring Book of the Year Award for a book with a wide appeal at an affordable price, and a Specialist Book of the Year Award which, in the opinions of the judges, is an impressive feat of research and endeavour regardless of its retail cost.

“We never fail to be amazed at the quality and variety of titles that our experienced judges propose for the Awards, and this year is no exception,” said Peter Read, the Club’s Motoring Committee Chairman.

 “The Royal Automobile Club possesses one of the world’s finest motoring libraries in the world, one we add to constantly. The history of the Club spans that of the car itself, and it is our duty to stoke enthusiasm in all aspects of motoring history including literature” said Peter Read.

The award committee consists of six expert judges who are totally independent of the Royal Automobile Club, that represent the UK’s most informed motoring literary critics. Tom Wiltshire, book reviewer for leading weekly magazine Auto Express, and Mark Dixon, the respected deputy editor of Octane magazine. They are joined by Christian Whitehead from the motoring department of London bookstore Foyles, leading independent motoring bookseller Ben Horton of Hortons Books, Gordon Cruickshank from Motor Sport magazine and Mick Walsh international editor of Classic & Sports Car magazine.

2018 shortlist of contenders includes works on racing driver biographies, marque histories and general motoring to legends in engineering and vehicle design.

London, 7th September 2018: The people, businesses, cars, clubs, books, events and museums that are in with a chance of winning the most prestigious prizes in historic motoring have been revealed.

Organisers of The Historic Motoring Awards 2018, in association with EFG Private Banking, received hundreds of nominations from experts and enthusiasts across the globe before whittling them down to shortlists for 18 categories. These range from mindblowing restorations to the dedicated individuals and companies whose support keeps the classic car world thriving.

The finalists will now progress to the last stage of the judging process, in which a select committee of specialists and personalities from the motoring world will pick the winners in all the categories bar one, the Car of the Year, which will be decided by a public vote.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony and gala dinner at the stunning Sheraton Grand Hotel London Park Lane on Thursday 25th October. Steve Rider, sports presenter and TV broadcaster, will be hosting what is sure to be an enjoyable and memorable evening.

Now in their eighth year, The Historic Motoring Awards in association with Octane magazine, recognise and celebrate the elite of the classic and performance car industry and the headline sponsor is EFG Private Banking. The awards are also supported by Footman James, Quick Fit SBS, HERO and Hortons Books.

MASERATI IS THE MAIN PARTNER OF THE GRAN PREMIO NUVOLARI 2018

1934 Tazio Nuvolari Maserati 6C-34 GP Italia Monza

Modena, 7 September 2018 – The Gran Premio Nuvolari, a regularity rally only open to historic cars built between 1919 and 1972, will be held from 13 to 16 September on a route which starts and ends in Mantua, the birthplace of Tazio Nuvolari.

Maserati will be paying tribute to the "Flying Mantuan”, one of the greatest drivers of all time, as the Main Partner of the GP Nuvolari, the rally that bears his name. Throughout the event, Maserati will be exhibiting the 6C-34 from the Umberto Panini Collection in Modena and the Levante GranSport MY19 in the magnificent setting of Piazza Sordello in Mantua.

Ernesto Maserati designed the Maserati 6C-34 in response to the new international regulations based on the maximum weight limit of 750 kg. With a 270 HP straight 6 cylinder engine and a top speed of 250 km/h, it went directly from the factory to its racing debut, at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on 9 September 1934 when Tazio Nuvolari drove it to fifth place overall. Also at the wheel of the 6C-34, “Nivola” had a thrilling end to the season: on 30 September he finished third in Brno and in the following weeks he achieved two particularly impressive victories, with a win on the Modena Circuit on 14 October and again in the Coppa Principessa di Piemonte on the Naples Circuit a week later, on 21 October 1934.

The Maserati Levante, the brand's first SUV, presented in the MY19 version at the 25th edition of the Festival of Speed held at Goodwood from 12 to 15 July, features a restyling that has combined important technical updates, such as the new, improved short-stroke paddle shifters, the adaptive Full LED Matrix headlights, with the addition of the GranLusso and GranSport trims and the introduction of new contents such as “Pieno Fiore” leather, the new external colours, the new wheels and a wider selection of interior trims.

The Maserati cars taking part in the event include: the A6 1500 Berlinetta designed by Pininfarina and built in 1949 - the first Maserati road model, a sports car intended for gentlemen drivers, with a "1500" engine that provided the basis for Maserati racing and road cars of the following years, starting with the A6 GCS; and a Quattroporte built in 1968 - a car that marked a milestone in the history of Maserati, since the first Quattroporte generation, in 1963, created a completely new market segment, that of the luxury sports sedan. Maserati will also be opening the parade of over 300 teams taking part in the GP Nuvolari by organising the Maserati Tribute, a "race within the race", with the cars in the current range - the Quattroporte flagship, the Ghibli sports sedan and the Levante SUV - lining up on the front row.

The 2018 edition of the GP Nuvolari, held this year for the 28th time, offers a new-look route with the first stage from Mantua across the Po Valley and the Apennines to the Adriatic Riviera, the second stage from Rimini through the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany, Umbria and Marche regions and back to Rimini, and the third stage from the Adriatic Sea through the towns and cities of Emilia Romagna to the finishing line in Mantua.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will celebrate the 2018 Goodwood Revival this weekend – the 20th anniversary of the event – with a significant presence at the legendary motor circuit. The centrepiece will be the March Motor Works, this year set in the swinging ‘60’s. The Works include a period Rolls‑Royce showroom, recapturing the sights, sounds and atmosphere of one the marque’s glamorous locations during the same period.

Within the showroom, a stunning 1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Continental Drophead Coupé by Mulliner Park Ward will be displayed. The exquisite four-seater played a central role in the 1966 British film classic, ‘Blow-Up’, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni and starring David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles and internationally renowned ‘Super Model’, Veruschka. The authentic set features a promotion for the film, with actors portraying the stars being interviewed on set for a period fashion magazine.

Rolls-Royce will be represented on the famous motor circuit itself throughout the event by a handsome 1966 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Touring Limousine (PV 23 design), with a body by coachbuilder James Young. Finished in ivory over black and one of very few made with Hooper rear windows, this splendid touring limousine will form part of the Course Director’s entourage. Invited guests will have the opportunity to experience the marque’s legendary ‘magic carpet ride’ for themselves, in period luxury, if only marginally disturbed by the ticking of the original mechanical clock!

An exclusive fleet of contemporary Rolls-Royce motor cars will also be evident in the Goodwood area during the Revival weekend with invited VIP guests being conveyed in luxury from the Home of Rolls-Royce, located on the South-Eastern corner of the Goodwood Estate.

FINALISTS REVEALED IN NATIONAL CAR CLUB AWARDS 2018 IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOURISM IRELAND

The finalists of the 2018 National Car Club Awards have been revealed with the most nominations received since its inception in 2016 for the popular awards celebrating the UK’s classic car clubs, which are the heart and soul of the classic motoring community. 

So many nominations that some categories such as Unsung Hero and Printed Magazine have more finalists while the award for Club Event had so many enter, it has been split into two, creating two awards – Club Event: Show or Event and Club Event: Run, Rally or Tour.

The National Car Club Awards are held in association with Tourism Ireland, supported by Classic Car Weekly and endorsed by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC). The winners will be revealed at the Awards dinner on Saturday 24^th March 2018, alongside the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery. 

Awards Director Lee Masters said: “Once again the clubs continue to raise the bar and have made deciding the finalists a very tough job for the judges, who now have the difficult task of agreeing on the overall winners in the coming weeks. Good luck to all those selected.”

The finalists in ten award categories have been announced with a further seven awarded to clubs exhibiting at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery by the Award Judges. The finalists in the coveted Lifetime Achievement award are also yet to be revealed.  The 2018 judging panel includes Danny Hopkins, editor of Practical Classics; David Simister, editor of Classic Car Weekly; David Whale from FBHVC and David Boyce from main sponsor Tourism Ireland. 

2018 sees the addition of some new awards including the National Car Club ‘Young Member’ of the Year, the Best Car Club Contribution to Charity, and Best Live Demonstration on a Car Club Stand at Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery.

Finalists are invited to attend the Awards Dinner and Presentation on Saturday 24^th March at Birmingham’s NEC. Tickets for other clubs and individuals are on sale at www.nationalcarclubawards.com.
