VOLUME 3 OF 5054 MAGAZINE GOES ON SALE

Volume 3 of 5054 magazine is now on sale as a high-resolution PDF at www.5054magazine.co.uk

The motive culture magazine has been reinvented as a high-resolution, digital-only publication, and the new issue is available now. In addition to slashing the price from £12 delivered in the UK to just £4.50, 5054’s new format is intended to better showcase the magazine’s photography and high-quality graphics.

‘I was very happy with the quality of writing and originality of the first two issues, which is what 5054 was intended to be all about,’ said founder and editor Hilton Holloway. ‘It features the sort of content, insight and illustrations you won’t see anywhere else, with long reads of the kind that have vanished from mainstream automotive magazines.

‘However, the increasing cost of postage and the fact we were also selling the magazine globally – often via unreliable delivery chains – was clearly a significant hurdle for a print-only future.

‘But there’s another reason for going to a high-quality digital format. The photography and illustrations are now more vibrant and detailed than print could allow, even with the very high-quality processes we used for Volumes 1 and 2.

‘For example, the Trojan handbook featured in this issue is nearly 100 years old and yet it absolutely shines out in high-resolution. For a magazine dealing with the glory of engineering, digital makes a great deal of sense.’

Volume 3 of 5054 has a British theme, built around the best analysis you will ever read on the great British Leyland disaster. The piece is adapted from Daniel Cohen’s degree dissertation, which received a distinction last year. He spent months in the National Archives, studying the events through official Government records.

Another highlight are the anonymously supplied Rover Group documents from the very last days of active BMW ownership, and they give a definitive insight into why the German carmaker bailed out 20 years ago. Richard Bremner’s Morris Minor ‘barn find’, meanwhile, is just the kind of deeply fascinating and richly illustrated feature you won’t get anywhere else.

Fans of print need not be disappointed, however. We can print Volume 3 to order in batches of 100. Dedicated magazine aficionados can send a message of interest via the 5054 website.

FANTASTIC FIAT 500C IS PRIZE FOR NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM VISITOR

A brand new Fiat 500C TwinAir has been presented to the winner of the National Motor Museum Trust Prize Draw in a ceremony at Beaulieu's Palace House.

Beaulieu Managing Director Russell Bowman handed the keys for the bright red soft-top to Rosalind Cottee and her husband Norman, who were delighted to drive home to Maidenhead from the New Forest in the sought-after top raffle prize. They were joined for the ceremony by Niall James from Snows Fiat and Abarth, which supplied the car.

Rosalind and Norman had visited Beaulieu in the summer with their grandchildren when Rosalind bought her successful raffle ticket in the National Motor Museum. She said: “We had a lovely day, but I really didn’t expect to win anything, let alone the car. I think the only other thing I’ve ever won in a competition was a bowl of fruit, so this is wonderful! We’re both retired so I will be using the Fiat for local trips.” 

Carole McGuire, from Tonbridge in Kent, won the second prize – a money-can’t-buy opportunity to take part in the 2019 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, as a passenger in one of the National Motor Museum Trust’s historic vehicles, with an overnight stay in London. Seated in the 1904 De Dion Bouton Model Q, which she will ride in for the 60-mile event, Carole was presented with a commemorative certificate by National Motor Museum Manager and Chief Engineer Doug Hill.

Carole said: “I’m thrilled to bits. It was meant to be! Years ago, I used to live near the route of the run so I always went to watch the veteran cars pass by.”

Looking forward to taking part in the event, Carole is well aware that preparation is the key. “I’m hoping it’s not going to be raining, although I think I might need to wear my thermals!” she added.

The third prize went to Michael Burton, from Formby near Liverpool, who won a VIP trip around the New Forest in a vehicle from the National Motor Museum collection. This special day out also includes a visit to the Beaulieu Chocolate Studio for a demonstration and chocolate treat goody bag.

FINALISTS REVEALED IN NATIONAL CAR CLUB AWARDS 2018 IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOURISM IRELAND

The finalists of the 2018 National Car Club Awards have been revealed with the most nominations received since its inception in 2016 for the popular awards celebrating the UK’s classic car clubs, which are the heart and soul of the classic motoring community. 

So many nominations that some categories such as Unsung Hero and Printed Magazine have more finalists while the award for Club Event had so many enter, it has been split into two, creating two awards – Club Event: Show or Event and Club Event: Run, Rally or Tour.

The National Car Club Awards are held in association with Tourism Ireland, supported by Classic Car Weekly and endorsed by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC). The winners will be revealed at the Awards dinner on Saturday 24^th March 2018, alongside the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery. 

Awards Director Lee Masters said: “Once again the clubs continue to raise the bar and have made deciding the finalists a very tough job for the judges, who now have the difficult task of agreeing on the overall winners in the coming weeks. Good luck to all those selected.”

The finalists in ten award categories have been announced with a further seven awarded to clubs exhibiting at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery by the Award Judges. The finalists in the coveted Lifetime Achievement award are also yet to be revealed.  The 2018 judging panel includes Danny Hopkins, editor of Practical Classics; David Simister, editor of Classic Car Weekly; David Whale from FBHVC and David Boyce from main sponsor Tourism Ireland. 

2018 sees the addition of some new awards including the National Car Club ‘Young Member’ of the Year, the Best Car Club Contribution to Charity, and Best Live Demonstration on a Car Club Stand at Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery.

Finalists are invited to attend the Awards Dinner and Presentation on Saturday 24^th March at Birmingham’s NEC. Tickets for other clubs and individuals are on sale at www.nationalcarclubawards.com.
